I was also there to document the Type 2 Detectives TV Build. This time they slammed an early bay single cab. Tubbed at the front and ‘C’ notched at the rear.Pictures from the build will follow later this week when I get chance to go through the 300 images from the first 2 days of the build.

The Press Pass gave me access onto the strip itself, amazing to be so close to these phenomenal machines.

Below are a few of the 1000 images It took on the first 2 days.

I will post images from the T2D build later along with some unreal HD video action from the strip.

He could only afford 2 models and you can see Sophie and Tom expertly modelling the t-shirts in these first few images.

However, when the pros left alternative models had to be found, including one that needed to be a female (a rather butch one at that, can you guess which one?)

I was originally invited my Rikki James from SSVC after meeting him on the Ninove Cruise earlier in the year. Paul from T2D also suggested that I sell some posters from their stand (muchio apprecio for the trade space Paul).

As the van was staying in the Paddock area in Sandown Sat & Sun so I booked a room at the Ship Hotel in Weybridge. I was given the disabled room bizarrely, but it turned out to be rather palatial, perfect as I had 35 posters to wrap up and needed the floor space.

Saturday was an early start, the van was filthy so I was washing it in the car park at 6:15 in the morning! Then finished off some more poster wrapping. No time for breakfast, off to the Sandown gates for 7:45am.

The Paddock

Was great lining up next to Shep from Boss Dog who arrived with the awesome graphic wrapped split screen. Some amazing vans inside and out of the paddock. The weather was great for HDR’s. Good cloud coverage making for some moody pics.

Met up with Tom Wheatley on the Sunday. We sent a few hours checking out some of the rides in the paddock and talked HDR photography (yawn I hear you say). But its great to speak to a fellow photo geek.

Poster Sales

The posters were really well received. We sold over half the stock we took with us which was amazing. The landscape ones sold on the Saturday and we could have sold them 10 times over! Others didn’t sell quiet so well, but it was more of a test the water thing.

Finally, thanks to everyone who bought a poster. Means a lot knowing that my photography is appreciated by more than just me!

Those people that asked about photo sessions for their buses. I’m chuffed to be asked to do that for you. I’d be well up for it, just get in contact and hopefully we can get a date set and get shooting. I will be attending some more events during the summer. I’ll be posting events we’ll be attending on our new page imaginatively named… Events.

Also cheers to T2D for the trade space. Cheers fellas.

Dunk is setting up his own customized Volkswagen interior company and wanted some imagery for his new website. He’s based in St Neots and suggested we take some pictures of his 1966 11-window split screen van. Its a very clean van that’s been through the usual T2D slamming and mechanical upgrades and is one seriously cool van.

The day went from bad to worse as the original location had had its access blocked. So we found another place just down the road and found some open gates, people walking there dogs and a nice open area to take some pictures, all seemed well and good.

Abandon ship, its going down…

Then it decided to rain (the weather forecast wasn’t great, but no signs of rain I must report at 11am this morning). Fighting through the drizzle we then found ourselves locked in the field with no way out. It was getting dark and we were both wet and cold. To eventiually found what we thought was an escape route only for Smurf (Dunks van) to drift off the field path and sunk into the mud. nicely embedded into the mud we finally had to be rescued by the farmer. To be honest he wasn’t too bad at giving us a bollocking, but if you’re going to leave fields open with no sign posts, whats a VW photographer going to do eh?!?

The promise is to return for more shots in better weather.

Another exciting element was that my cousin Marcus was joining me, not that he was the exciting part, but the fact that he too has a new toy in the way of a 2006 Toyota MR2. It looks very cool in sliver with red detailed interior.

I decided a cool location would be on an industrial location where I am renting a couple of storage units. The blue cargo containers would make for some interesting backdrops as well as the tungsten security lights would be coming on as it got dark. The sky this evening was magical, not hat you will notice from the photos, we were about an hour late. Another lesson learned!

Another reason for the trip out was that I have been watching over and over Zach Arias’s amazing OneLight Workshop DVD which I would highly recommend. I knew nothing about flash photography before getting this DVD, ok I read a few things and experimented but Zack’s my kinda teacher, explains the knowledge without all the techie jargon. I still don’t know much about flash photography but the DVD taught me the basics. I just need to watch it several more times and practice, practice, practice so it becomes second nature and learn how to control light.

Anyway, some pictures of us messing around and acting about 12 year olds.

The TV Bus got the full T2D treatment by the guys from Burwell turning an old faded bay window into one of the coolest rides around. To complement the full slam works the interior was custom fitted by Simon and his team at Interior Motive.

The Bus has made several award winning appearances at selected VW Events around the country and has also made a TV appearance.

UPDATE

The shoot went very well and I’m pretty chuffed with the pictures. Weather was good, not too bright, overcast giving a nice soft light which is ideal for something that has glass and highly reflective like a bus (even a van with this much patina!).

Hopefully they’ll be published early next year in either Feb / Mar 2010 issue of Volksworld Camper & Bus. Keep you posted

Had a great road trip around the west coast of Ireland during the end part of the Summer in 2009.

The weather was appalling, typical Irish summer I was told on may occasions. But the overcast weather made for some very dramatic skies and really rich vibrant images, luminous greens and heavy dramatic skies.

It gave me an excuse to take mostly HDR pictures of the landscapes to capture the heavy atmosphere. All pictures taken in large RAW format enabling me the best pictures for processing once we returned to England.

‘Splity’ was the main feature in most of the pictures. The off white colour of the VW camper made some stark contrsts with the usual black seas menacing skies in the background.
